• Jay Aylward

    OWNER AND GUIDE

After chasing freshwater species with a fly rod across the country for nearly a decade, Jay Aylward returned to his roots in western Massachusetts in 2012 to pursue trout, bass, and pike with flies. He has developed many new fly patterns specific to each species. He owns the Handmade Angler where he guides, ties custom flies, and teaches fly fishing and tying classes. He knows that clients are expecting an experience that is bigger than the fishing alone.

Jay is at home on the water in his drift boat, or on foot in the backcountry. He guides all fly fishing enthusiasts, regardless of age and experience. Seven to ninety years old, first-time fly fishers to the full-blown addict, all are welcome. He is energetic, patient, and a passionate fly angler. Enjoy your time on the water with someone who understands that there are few things better than pursuing fish with a fly.

Jay is an endorsed Orvis Fly Fishing Guide, has a Master’s degree in ecology, and is certified in wilderness first aid. His background in science and years of experience on the water contribute to every trip he offers.

  • Robb Alexander

    GUIDE

Robb possesses what has to be described as a predator's instinct when it comes to reading moving, still, fresh, or saltwater. His technique has been forged threw the crucible of lifelong experience and sharpened with great names in fly casting, fishing, and tying. He has been an avid fly angler since a teenager, and now guides and commercially ties flies.

He is a clear communicator and patient. Robb has an uncanny ability to break down the fly cast in ways that benefit both new and experienced fly casters. He has an expert knowledge of fish behavior and the techniques to catch them. A day on the water with Robb is fun and fishy.

Most evenings Robb can be found at his tying vise tying perfect renditions of baitfish for both the salt and freshwater, perfect nymphs and dries. His tying ability cannot be overstated. An absolute magician at the vise, his thread and feather creations bring a lot of fish to the net.

Robb also plays bass and guitar in two bands: Electric Flannel, a 90s cover band and Belit, an acoustic rock group.
